醫師警告，英國有高達400萬人不當服用抗血脂藥物施德丁（statins），導致他們必須承受副作用的風險，且幾乎沒有從中受益的機會。

英國「每日郵報」（Daily Mail）報導，伯明罕大學（Birmingham University）研究發現，在服用這種降低膽固醇藥物，以防首次心臟病發作或中風的病患中，有超過半數「不適合」這種治療。

研究顯示，由於非專科醫師開立這款藥物處方的情況普遍，導致每年浪費超過1億英鎊。

過去10年，在英國，服用施德丁的人口從500萬攀升至800萬人。施德丁能夠降低中高危險群患者心臟病發作和中風的風險，然而，有1/5服用這種藥物的患者，可能會出現副作用。

副作用包括肌肉疼痛、疲勞、胃部不適、睡眠障礙和勃起障礙。

這份根據36萬5000名患者以及421名非專科醫師數據彙整而來的研究，發現每10名服用施德丁來預防首次心臟病發和中風的患者，就有6人「不適合」這種治療，例如膽固醇過高但沒有其他風險因子的中年人。

這項研究刊登在「公共科學圖書館期刊」（PLoSOne）。

而必須服用這種藥物的患者，例如高齡患者，卻僅有1/4服用。

任職伯明罕大學公共衛生和人口科學系（PublicHealth and Population Science）的馬歇爾醫師（DrTom Marshall）說：「這種藥物很有效，但卻沒有用在合適的患者身上。」

他還說：「有許多能從中受惠的患者，沒有服用這種藥物，而許多服用這種藥物的患者，卻無法從中得益。」
