一位在德國卡迪威百貨公司工作的「資深耶誕老人」日前被無端解雇。消息傳出後，這名耶誕老人獲得國際輿論聲援，網友紛紛為他打抱不平，也使得他更加聲名大噪，已有其他商家邀他去扮演耶誕老人。

佩特‧吉奧吉今年72歲，他在卡迪威百貨公司扮演耶誕老人長達13年。就在今年耶誕佳節來臨前夕，佩特突然接到一通電話：「卡迪威一名工作人員打電話給我，說不用來了，他們有了一位新的耶誕老人。我聽到後差點跌倒，心裡非常難過。」

由於卡迪威百貨公司在推銷耶誕商品時，一直將佩特作為代言人，佩特也因此頗有名氣。他還說過，他不用刻意扮演耶誕老人，因為自己就是。

消息傳出後，在社會上引起軒然大波，人們不能接受在耶誕節這個慈悲為懷的宗教節日發生這種事。不僅卡迪威百貨公司收到許多來自國內外的抗議信，還有人在網路成立連署請願書，要卡迪威收回解雇通知。

在輿論壓力下，卡迪威只好在官網上回應，聲稱因為佩特已年屆70多歲，即使是耶誕老人也應該可以退休了，「卡迪威商場每天要接待10萬人次，需要很好的體能。」

但網友對上述說法不領情，認為耶誕老人的形象本來就該是一位令人尊敬的高齡長者。還有網友說：「如果卡迪威需要一位體能很好的耶誕老人，那乾脆去找一位超人或者蜘蛛人。」

雖然最後卡迪威仍沒有妥協，但佩特經過此事反而更加出名。目前已有其他商家邀請他去扮演耶誕老人。
