Google 身為全世界最知名的科技品牌，肯定會被眾多環保團體檢視環保議題。其實 Google 早在多年前就開始進行再生能源、減少碳足跡等各式綠色環保課題。
Google 在全球擁有許多的資料中心、也有龐大的 Google 總部和辦公室，相關的環保議題一直是許多人關注的焦點。日前T客邦趁著 Google I/O 大會期間前進 Google 山景城總部，Google 能源與永續經營總監 Rick Needham 特地與我們聊聊 Google 多年來鎖執行的相關環保議題，從大家關注的資料中心減少能耗、投資各種風力和太陽能再生能源，到辦公室的綠色建築，甚至是使用者多使用 Googole 雲端服務和 Google Apps 都有助於減低能耗。

以搜尋起家的 Google，隨著事業的壯大，資料庫、各地辦公室也不斷擴增。Google 在 2007 年開始推動與環保、永續性相關的內容，希望 Google 做任何事情都是減少碳排放、減少能耗，同時做些事情讓社會減少碳排放。
Google 提出多種方式，從不同面相進行相關的環保作業。首先是進行有效率的能源，Google 提出幾種實際的運作方式，包含更為節能的資料中心。 Google 的資料中心（包含Google 台灣資料中心）相較一般資料中心減少 50% 的能源 ，能有效減少碳排放。Google 也會因地制宜，例如在芬蘭，因為北歐地區便可使用免費的冷卻水。如果有可改進的空間，Google 也會儘快調整成最適當的方案。

Google 也提倡綠色辦公室空間（green office space），許多地方、尤其總部有達到LEED綠能建築規範，以及使用 health meritorious 環保建材。透過使用環保建材、大量種植綠色植栽作物等方式。
在擁有廣大員工數的 Google 總部，也透過多種交通方式減少碳排放，例如推廣電動汽車並提供充電停車位、供員工快速移動的 G Bike 腳踏車，以及透過廣大的交通巴士，減少員工開車上下班共計 4000 台車輛。透過上述交通解決方案，都能有效減少碳排放。

再來是透過再生能源（renewable technology）取得電力。例如 Google 山景城總部屋頂大量裝設太陽能板，共計發電量可提供 1.9MW（兆瓦），此外 Google 也投資各種再生能源方案，如風力發電。

Google 也專注在碳補償（High Quality Carbon Offsets），相信大家先前看過T客邦報導都知道 Google ˋ南加州的太陽能農場（ ISEGS 太陽能發電廠），發電量可應付 14 萬個家庭使用，相當於美國 30% 總太陽能發電量。Google 總計投資金額超過 10 億美金，再生能源估計共可達到 2GW（斤瓦），可讓 50 萬個家庭使用 Google 再生能源。

Google 最後還提出一點方式，就是：更快網路和自家雲端服務。Google 提出使用雲端服務，透過高效率的雲端服務能減少耗損能耗，例如使用 Gmail、Hangout 視訊等方案。如果 860 萬美國辦公室的使用者使用雲端服務，Google 可協助減少 87% 能源消耗，節省的能源能讓洛杉磯市區使用一年。
