台灣的大學生上課愛遲到，不認真，不如大陸大學生，讓台大教授指兩岸競爭力落差，「比一千顆飛彈瞄準台灣還驚悚」。但檢討學生之前，社會、學校和老師們必先反求諸己，到底原因何在？如何改進？

英國皇家學會的科學期刊《生物學通訊》曾刊登一篇有卅位作者的文章，作者數目多固然奇怪，但更令人吃驚的是前廿九位作者都是英國一個小學的小學生；當我們很多研究生連畢業論文都寫不出來，為什麼英國小學生卻可以在一流的期刊發表論文？

原因就在英國的小學可以選擇上課或研究的題材，可以因材施教和因興趣而學習。而我們的教育從小到大都規畫得太細了，每個領域都說它們很重要，都要求一定的必修或必選學分，學生上課時間被規畫好的科目填得滿滿的，無法選擇自己有興趣的科目和沒有自己想像和研究的時間，上起課來當然沒勁。

例如科學的教育，除了傳統的物理、化學、生物、地球科學等之外，生存在現代社會更需要很多新的知識，例如資訊科學現在誰敢說不重要，又如臉書等社交網路的影響力日增，社會網路科學也很重要；這些統統都要納入必修當然不可能，但重點就是如何讓學生能接觸到基本的知識，然後又有選擇權可以針對自己的興趣深入。

在學校容量不夠，必須篩選學生的年代，一致性的課程和統一的考試還情有可原。但現在少子化，學校容量過剩，不管那個層級，升學都不是問題，那麼從小學到大學，就不需要再有由上而下的「統一」或「一致」的東西。譬如台北有高職專門培養廚藝達人，花蓮有學院專門培養觀光餐飲專家，這就是特色。只要其畢業生能為社會所用，適才適所就業，就達到教育目的。

學生上課遲到和睡覺是他們對課程不感興趣，反正這是系上逼我修的，不是我想修的，先天心態上就會拒絕。如果有大學能開放學生只要修滿一二八學分即可畢業，而不去管他們修了那些課，學生學習動機絕對可以改善，我也敢說學生畢業時的氣質和程度絕對不會差。

人們說現在有了Google大神，何需學校教育？所以現在學校要強調的是人格教育、情緒教育、創意教育、逆境教育等等，而不是傳統的單方面知識的傳授。因此學校制度、學習規畫和教學方式都需要更改，才能培養下一代所需的人才。
