二戰戰敗後，日本軍隊遭到盟軍解散，並且根據憲法第9條的限制，日本不得擁有軍隊與透過戰爭解決爭端的權利；但是隨著冷戰開始，為了防止共產主義在遠東地區擴張，美國於1954年協助日本成立自衛隊。

日本自衛隊雖然名義上不是軍事組織，但實際上的功能等同其他國家的軍隊，軍力甚至能排上全球前10名。不過，採取募兵制的自衛隊與其他國家一樣，面臨兵源招募不足的問題，因而擴大招收女性自衛隊員。

日本自衛隊招募女性成員始於1968年，一開始只限於陸上自衛隊招收，並且只限於醫療衛生工作，但現在連海上與航空自衛隊都已對日本女性開放。

雖然少子化與高齡社會讓日本自衛隊面臨招募兵員難題，不過卻也因為經濟泡沫化，使得報考自衛隊的女性比例逐年攀升。她們必須在候補生學校及防衛大學接受戰鬥、野外勤務、擒拿、劍道等訓練，才能正式成為自衛隊的一份子。
