據國外媒體報導，黑洞能夠使任何物質無法逃脫，甚至是光線，通常人們認為黑洞對於太空旅行帶來致命威脅。目前，物理學家在地球上發現類似黑洞的結構，大西洋南部出現『海洋漩渦黑洞』。

根據騰訊科學報導，科學家使用十九世紀美國小說家埃德加·愛倫·坡的《莫斯肯漩渦餘生記》來描繪這個海洋黑洞——『漩渦邊緣寬廣的閃爍噴霧帶，但是沒有粒子滑入這種可怕漏斗結構的大嘴之中。』
該研究指出，這正如海洋黑洞的情況描述，噴霧帶環繞著漩渦，但是沒有液體落入其中。類似的宇宙黑洞被光量子球體包裹著，由於黑洞的密度因素，該區域引力作用非常強，導致光線在軌道中傳播。同時，仍保留著光量子平衡性，它們既不落入黑洞，也不逃溢。與埃德加在《莫斯肯漩渦餘生記》中描述的噴霧帶有著相似之處。
與宇宙黑洞十分相似，海洋黑洞具有奇點。為了精確定位海洋黑洞的位置，科學家檢測了印度洋厄加勒斯洋流的衛星圖像，該洋流沿著非洲東海岸前行，之後逆轉形成一個環狀洋流。有時環狀洋流會形成漩渦，超過三個月保持漩渦的完整性。
海洋黑洞在海洋食物鏈中建立一個可移動綠洲，或者通過遠端傳輸鹽分和溫度，可對氣候產生深刻影響。黑洞漩渦能夠捕獲任何鄰近的漂浮碎屑並吞並它們，因此能夠傳輸海洋石油和垃圾。
