過敏與腸躁症有關嗎?

成年過敏患者有較高的腸躁症發生率，顯示免疫系統與腸躁症有關。羅許大學醫學中心的托賓醫師和她的同僚發現腸躁症在季節性過敏性鼻炎( 2.67倍)、過敏性濕疹( 3.85倍)、憂鬱症( 2.56倍)的患者的發生率較高。

一般人口中有15%有腸躁症的困擾，腸躁症的症狀包括過去一年中超過12週的腹痛、排便的硬度或頻率改變、上過大號後會舒緩。過去也有些研究間接指出腸躁症與過敏的關係，但是實際的比例沒有被研究過。

兒童的過敏性皮膚炎經常與腸胃不適和食物過敏同時發生，臨床上的過敏性濕疹可能可以視為腸胃過敏和腸躁症一個有用的指標。

29%的腸躁症患者有氣喘，這一群的患者(過敏性腸躁症)與沒有過敏症狀的腸躁症患者可能是不同的疾病，病理上不同，治療方式也不一樣。
