習慣台灣燈火通明,我剛搬來美國的時候,面對伸手不見五指,路上足以媲美德州電鋸情節,黑漆漆一片的「夜生活」,的確很不習慣。那時常暗自希望以後住的地方可以有越多路燈越好。殊不知,在美國,越高級的住宅區,晚上越暗。因為美國人重隱私。也因此,越隱密、越黑漆漆,變相的等於有錢人專屬的privacy。而在美國買房子,除了華人爸媽最關心的學區以外,評論一個地區好壞不是離高速公路近不近,而是附近治安如何、鄰居素質好不好。有時候會聽人說:「I grew up in a tough neighborhood」,可想鄰里對美國人生活的重要性。
