大會第2種子、世界No.2「費爸」Roger Federer在澳網第3輪碰到嚴厲挑戰，最終還是撐不到第5盤，以盤數1：3敗給義大利非種子Andreas Seppi，也爆出本屆至今最大冷門。

Seppi首盤先聲奪人，次盤鏖戰至搶七險勝，雖然Federer保住第3盤，第4盤也逼到搶七，但自己接連出現雙發失誤，加上Seppi最後精采的底線穿越致勝球，宣告這位4屆澳網冠軍提前落馬。

最終比數為6：4、7：6（5）、4：6、7：6（5），贏家是Seppi。

Seppi單打世界排名46，生涯10次對戰Federer全部落敗，這次可說一雪前恥，殺進十六強也追平自己在2013年澳網最佳成績。
